LIV Golf Eyes a Major Financial Deal as Saudi Funding Nears Its End

LIV Golf is entering a crucial new chapter as the league works on a major financial restructuring involving Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and private investment firm BC Partners.

The proposed arrangement comes at a pivotal moment for LIV Golf. The Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which has been the league’s primary financial backer since its launch, has decided to provide funding only through the end of the 2026 season. That decision has pushed LIV to look for a new long-term financial structure that could keep the league operating beyond this year.

A New Direction for LIV Golf

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil recently announced that the league had secured a lead investor for its next phase. The agreement has been approved by LIV’s board, although the final details of the investment are still being worked out.

Reports have identified BC Partners’ credit division as the potential lead investor in negotiations surrounding the league’s next stage. The broader plan is being described as a possible “LIV 2.0,” with the goal of creating a more sustainable business model and reducing the league’s dependence on Saudi funding.

The proposed structure could also involve additional minority investors. LIV has reportedly attracted interest from more than a dozen potential investors, suggesting that the league is attempting to build a wider financial base rather than rely on a single backer.

Why the Deal Matters

The future of LIV Golf depends heavily on its ability to secure enough capital while maintaining its biggest asset: its players.

Since launching, LIV has spent billions of dollars to establish itself as a major force in professional golf and to attract some of the sport’s biggest names. The league now faces the challenge of maintaining that talent while moving toward a different financial model.

One of the most notable ideas under consideration is giving players significant equity in the restructured business. Under the proposed “LIV 2.0” model, players could become majority equity holders, giving them a direct financial interest in the league’s long-term success.

What Could LIV 2.0 Look Like?

The next version of LIV Golf could look considerably different from the league fans have watched since 2022.

Preliminary plans reportedly call for a smaller schedule of 10 core team events per year, split between events in the United States and international locations. Prize funds could also be reduced compared with LIV’s earlier model.

The changes reflect a broader attempt to make the league financially sustainable. Instead of depending primarily on enormous external funding, LIV would need to strengthen its commercial operations, attract investors, develop media opportunities and continue growing its global audience.

Saudi Funding Is Coming to an End

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has played a central role in LIV Golf’s development. However, PIF announced in April that it would fund LIV only through the 2026 season, citing changes in its investment priorities and broader economic considerations.

That decision created an urgent need for LIV to find alternative financing.

The league has therefore been working on a new investment strategy while also examining different options for its corporate structure. Earlier reports indicated that LIV was seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in fresh capital to support its future operations.

The Players Could Become Even More Important

For LIV Golf, securing investment is only one part of the challenge. Keeping major players committed to the league could be just as important.

Several high-profile stars have built their careers around LIV since its launch, while others have faced uncertainty about their future with the league. A successful restructuring could give players a stronger ownership position and potentially provide an incentive for them to remain part of the competition.

At the same time, a reduction in prize money and changes to the schedule could influence decisions by some of the league’s biggest names. The coming months could therefore be critical for LIV’s roster as well as its finances.

A Critical Moment for Professional Golf

LIV Golf has already changed the professional golf landscape by challenging the traditional tour system and attracting major players with large financial commitments.

Now, the league faces a different test.

Can LIV transition from a heavily funded startup-style operation into a more sustainable sports business?

The potential agreement involving BC Partners, combined with additional investors and greater player ownership, could provide the foundation for that transition. But the final structure, the level of investment and the future of several star players remain important questions.

For golf fans, the development could have consequences far beyond LIV itself. The league’s next move may influence player movement, tournament schedules, investment in professional golf and the wider competition among the sport’s major organizations.

For now, LIV Golf appears to be working toward a new era — one that could look very different from the league originally launched with massive Saudi financial backing.

The proposed “LIV 2.0” may ultimately determine whether the controversial golf league can establish itself as a sustainable long-term competitor in the professional game.
